Read 'Nutrition' p152-153 and 'Diet and coronary heart disease' p154-155 of AS textbook carefully and thoroughly and then write an essay entitled 'Diet and coronary heart disease' covering the following points:

  • Define the term balanced diet.
  • Explain how consumption of an unbalanced diet can lead to malnutrition with reference to obesity.
  • Discuss the possible links between diet and coronary heart disease.
  • Discuss the possible effects of a high blood cholesterol level on the heart and circulatory system with reference to high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and low-density lipoproteins (LDLs).

Read 'Improving food production' p156-157 and 'Microorganisms and food' p158-159 of AS textbook carefully and thoroughly and then write an essay entitled 'Food production and microbes' covering the following points:

  • Describe how the use of chemicals including fertilisers and pesticides (plants) and antibiotics (animals) can boost food production.
  • Outline how selective breeding is used to produce plants with high yield, disease resistance and pest resistance and how selective breeding is used to produce domestic animals with high productivity.
  • Outline the methods that can be used to prevent food spoilage by microorganisms.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of using microorganisms to make food for human consumption.

Read 'Organisms that cause disease' p160-161, 'Transmission of diseases' p162-163 and 'The worldwide importance of certain diseases' p164-165 of AS textbook carefully and thoroughly and then write an essay entitled 'Transmission of disease' covering the following points:

  • Discuss what is meant by the terms health and disease.
  • Describe the causes and means of transmission of malaria, HIV/AIDS and TB.
  • Discuss the global impact of malaria, HIV/AIDS and TB including reference to the reasons why people in the less economically developed countries are more likely to suffer from infectious diseases.

W/C 2nd April 2012 [Easter Holiday work]

Complete past paper questions as an 'open book' exercise making sure you make full use of biological key terms and their definitions in your answers. Answers should also be detailed.

I have also included with this pack a suggested revision timetable for Biology in the 7 weeks that lead up to your exam. All Biology lessons up to the exam will be revision and there will be extra revision sessions after school offered after the Easter holidays that you can sign up to attend.
