Lent Term 2012 workset
Mrs Leoni Ellis
Before Sackville
I had a number of part time and summer jobs throughout my younger years ranging from working with animals, children, the elderly and the general public. After realising that my fear of heights meant a career as a fire fighter was unlikely I turned to my earlier experiences of work as inspiration for my future career options.
The common cliché of being inspired to teach by one of my own teachers is a true fact in my case.
I spent four happy years at St. Mary’s College University in Twickenham and exited ready to face a career in teaching. I have never regretted this decision for a minute.
In my previous schools I have held a variety of responsibilities including - Head of Department, Social Inclusion Project Leader and extra curricular co-ordinator. I joined Sackville in my seventh year of teaching.
Why I enjoy my subject
Having been brought up in a sporty family I had little choice but to become embroiled in all that is sporting alongside the rest of my family, luckily I quite enjoyed it!
Being a PE teacher allows me to pass on knowledge/experiences and watch young, unsure performers develop into experienced, self motivated sportsmen/women.
The role of a PE teacher allows you to connect with students on a level that is not always possible in other subjects. I participate actively alongside my students and experience the fun and joy of success that they do.
Why I enjoy Sackville
Sackville is quite unlike any other school I have worked in. The atmosphere is relaxed but purposeful, the working environment is calm but charged with excitement. I love the way we are able to really know our students and their personalities – not just from facts and figures but from talking, helping, from trips and school activities.
In addition to this the support and experiences gained from colleagues is something that all the teachers appreciate and cherish.
My favourite lesson
My favourite lesson has to be rounders – stood on the field in the summer sun with the vast space available to use and views on offer, what more could you ask for?
However, in contrast to this, the cross country route in early spring where the ground is still a bit soggy, the flowers are starting to come out and you can hear the excited shrieks of students running through the mud and over the puddles is also high up on my list.
Other roles
I am also Head of Year 11 which is a role I thoroughly enjoy – the frustrating parts of the job are easily outweighed by the rewards is reaps.
In addition to this I am part of a successful Duke of Edinburgh team. This award had rapidly grown in popularity with students as well as staff.
I take on the role of Head of Girls Pastoral Care very seriously. It involves trust, patience and understanding from all parties and I feel privileged to be allowed to help others during difficult times at school and at home.
Passions
My loving and understanding family are top of the list. A lot of the things I love to do, we do as a family – music, walking in the countryside and cooking are a few.
On an individual basis I play netball in a league regularly for a local team as their ‘centre’. I am also an active member of my local gym and enjoy taking part in the body pump and circuit training sessions.
