HOMEWORK

Mrs Christine Dewey

Before Sackville

Teaching is a fairly recent career choice – I started my working life more years than I care to remember ago as a cardiothoracic nurse specialist in a London teaching hospital. I then trained as a midwife working locally until I had a family of my own. Once my children were at school, I returned to the workplace as a Biomedical Scientist working in a Pathology Laboratory. In 2004, I decided it was time for a career change, completed my PGCE and entered the teaching profession. I taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics at Wilmington Grammar School for Boys, The Judd School, Tonbridge and Wilmington Girl’s Grammar School before joining Sackville as Head of Science in 2008.

Why I enjoy my subject

Science holds the key to helping us to understand the everyday world around us – it is about getting closer and closer to the truth based on evidence, having a willingness to accept that we don’t have all the answers yet and coming up with experiments to get closer to the answers. This inquisitiveness, excitement and willingness to question is what I really love about Science and my desire is to share that with others.

Why I enjoy Sackville

Sackville is one big, happy family where everyone is accepted for who they are and the added bonus of working in a beautiful setting.

My favourite lesson

I love teaching lessons where Biology and Chemistry ‘meet’ e.g. the chemistry that goes on inside cells.

Other roles

I am a Year 10 tutor.

Passions

My number one passion is my family – I have four amazing children (all grown up now) who are my best friends. I also love mountain trekking, reading crime novels, the theatre/performing arts and movies (most genres) and must confess that I am a exercise ‘junkie’! New York is my favourite place to visit.
