Lent Term 2012 workset
Mr Nick Young
Before Sackville
At University I was a keen triathlete alongside my teacher training studies. Once I graduated I got a job teaching P.E. at Hilden Grange Preparatory School which was a wonderful experience. I was fortunate enough to be able to continue to race and train alongside my work commitments and managed to represent Great Britain at the World Duathlon Championships (10km run, 40km cycle, 5km run) in Germany in 1998.
Why I enjoy my subject
Sport brings people together. It's sociable, fun, exciting, rewarding and at times frustrating but the anticipation and drama that unfolds in the lessons and matches is thrilling, whatever the result. I love the variety of sports we offer at Sackville and there is nothing quite like watching a student or team achieve something amazing, whether that be winning a National Championship or completing a simple skill for the first time. Whatever the level, the buzz of success and sense of achievement is great to see and be a part of.
Why I enjoy Sackville?
It's just the best, knowing all the students by name and watching them blossom in to mature individuals is incredibly rewarding. It's how every school should be!
My favourite Lesson?
I genuinely love all my teaching groups they are all so different in terms of the personalities involved and the content of the lessons but I would have to say that the 'SEPEP' football tournaments in the combined Years 7 and 8 and Year 9 and 10 Games lessons are current highlights.
Other roles
I've been involved in several pastoral roles, I teach 'A' Level Leisure Studies to Year 12 and 13 and co-ordinate the Sixth Form PSHE programme.
Passions
Spending time with my wife and children is top of my list. We try and get outside together as much as possible and watching my children grow and develop is a real privilege. I still love cycling and compete in local races.
