Lent Term 2012 workset
Mr Mike Perry
Before Sackville
I am originally from Sevenoaks, but moved away to study Business at theUniversityofHertfordshire. After this I spent five years working forOrangeinitially selling then marketing mobile phones. I was made redundant and decided to go back to university to do a PGCE in Business Studies. After qualifying I spent three years working in a comprehensive school in Hertfordshire, before relocating toKentand joining Sackville.
Why I enjoy my subject
In all honesty I don’t enjoy it; I just fell in to Business Studies because the PE course was over subscribed. How I dream of being a PE teacher and spending my days playing sport. Working in Mr. Young’s department would be a dream, but alas I’m inside the classroom teaching how businesses work. You can’t have it all.
Why I enjoySackvilleSchool
There are three reason in particular I really like Sackville School, Christmas holidays, Easter holidays & Summer holidays. On a serious note Sackville is an amazing place to teach. The students are polite, friendly and have a real desire to learn. This makes teaching a pleasure. It is a very caring place, where everyone is made to feel welcome and everyone is accepted for who they are.
My favourite lesson
Business changes so much from one day to the next, that it is almost impossible to say what topics I like teaching most. For me a good lesson in one that the students have enjoyed. At Sackville I have often been thanked for teaching a lesson, which at other schools is simply taken for granted.
Other roles
I am the Head of Dragonfire, ICT and Leisure Studies. I particularly enjoy the role as head of Dragonfire, the rivalry I have built up with Miss Fogarty (Falconcrest) in the last two can regularly be seen at house activities. I’m also keen to offer the students enterprise activities and last year organised a Sackville’s apprentice challenge in enrichment week. I also co-ordinate the Young Enterprise program and was pleased to hear the news this year that we had our first student (Sean Hickmott) pass the full award.
Passions
With my tongue now out of my cheek, of course I love business studies and really enjoy teaching a subject which to me is the most practical and important subject there is. No matter what walk of life you are in you will always be required to have some understanding of business.
I am also a keen sportsman and like to help out the PE department whenever I can. I am still actively involved in playing football for a local Saturday team called Ide Hill, but alas I have had to hang up my rugby boots since fracturing, dislocating, separating and reconstructing my left shoulder. Basically if there’s a ball involved I’ll play it!
