Art and Design Homework

Lent Term (Part 2) 2012

Students in year 7, 8 and 9 are set one piece of art and design homework each half term. Students should spend at least 2 hours working on each piece of homework. All students in years 7, 8 and 9 are provided with a plastic folder in which to transport their work to and from school. Written feedback from the teacher can be seen on the assessment sheet inside the plastic folder. In most cases, the homework should be completed on A3 cartridge paper provided by the art department. For any questions or concerns regarding art and design homework please email the head of art (joel.ramsay@sackvilleschool.com)

Year 7: Create a painting based on a landscape holiday photograph.

Select an interesting photograph that you have taken or from the internet of your favourite holiday location. Make an accurate sketch using pencil. Work in washes of watercolour, poster or acrylic paint to build up layers or more vibrant colours and tones. Details can be added with coloured pencils or pen if your wish to. Ensure your picture is large on A3 paper. You should spend at least 2 hours on your work.

Year 8: Create a coloured ‘Pop Art’ style picture of a packaged consumable product.

Decide which product you wish to base your work on. This could be a packet of crisps, chocolate bar, washing up powder, can of soup etc. Research some examples of Pop Art still life work on the internet and in books. Choose the materials you will use to create the artwork. You could use coloured pencils, paint, and collage or create your work on the computer. Ensure your work fills the A3 paper. You should spend at least 2 hours on your work.

Year 9: Design a puppet based upon a character from a film or novel.

Think carefully about which character you wish to base your puppet on. Gather pictures of the character from the internet to help you with your work. Decide whether the character will be a stick or string puppet. Lightly sketch out your design so it fills most of the A3 paper. When you are happy with the sketch, apply heavier pencils lines and colour using colour pencils. Felt-tip pens or paint. You should spend at least 2 hours on your work.

Mr Joel Ramsay

Before Sackville

I spent my childhood growing up in Leiston, a small town in Suffolk, eventually moving to Lowestoft in 1989 which has been the family home ever since. I enjoyed most subjects at school but found art something I was most passionate about. Following my formal education, I completed a degree in Art and Design at Suffolk University College my main areas of practice being painting and photography. Since qualifying as a teacher at Anglia Polytechnic University in 1999, I have lived in Essex, Suffolk, East Sussex and Kent. I joined Sackville school as Head of art in September 2008 following a five year period working as teacher of art at the North School in Ashford. Prior to that, I worked voluntarily for a charity in Eastbourne running after-school clubs for children and youth-groups. I also spent a year travelling and working in New Zealand and Australia after working for two years in my first teaching post at a Middle school in Norfolk.

Why I enjoy my subject

I believe Art and Design is a subject that everyone can enjoy and achieve self-fulfilment from. It is a sheer pleasure and privilege to encourage, inspire and motivate students towards fulfilling their artistic potential.

Why I enjoy Sackville?

I love teaching at Sackville School. The students are great and eager to do their best. The teachers are supportive of each other and work very hard to make the school an even better place. Being a relatively small school, there is a greater opportunity for teachers to show genuine interest, understanding and care for the students. This is certainly the most enjoyable and rewarding teaching job I have had.

My favourite Lesson?

I really enjoy teaching print-making. It is such a great process to experiment with and seeing students unveil the prints once they come off the press is always a joy.

Other roles

I manage the art department which involves teaching all students in year groups 7, 8 and 9, GCSE Fine Art and Textile Design and Fine Art and Photography A’ level courses. I am currently a form tutor for a lovely year seven group which I thoroughly enjoy. I teach extra GCSE art lessons three lunch times a week to students who are studying more subjects than the timetable will accommodate. I also run an after school GCSE/A level art club once a week and a lunch time art club for younger students.

Passions

I try to create as much art as I can as I find my own experimentation fuels my ideas for classroom activities. In the colder months I paint abstracts and in the spring and summer more traditional landscape paintings working on location. I also create humorous illustrations and caricatures. I play the drums and enjoy listening to all kinds of music. I go snowboarding as often as possible and am also a keen cyclist. I love visiting new places with my family and good home cooked food.
