Parents' Maths Class

Last year several parents and I attended Mrs Sherwood's maths class. The concept was to learn the strategies of modern mathematics to help the children - little did I realize I would be the one receiving help!

The classes were well attended, informative and friendly, meeting once-twice a term.  I found it encouraging meeting other parents who wanted to help their children as much as I wanted to help mine.

Mrs Sherwood's explanations were simple to understand and fun to learn so when she asked whether any parents would be interested in attending a maths class for parents, I decided to take up the opportunity.

At present, the class consists of three parents who meet informally once a fortnight, and work through GCSE papers.  Our aim is to take our GCSE in November.  I love Mrs Sherwood's teaching methods; she understands why pupils both young and old struggle with mathematics, her explanations are encouraging and never patronizing unlike many maths tutors I have known.  She makes the lessons fun -  I never realized maths could be fun and she gives me something my school maths teachers never gave me - a belief and confidence that I can pass the dreaded exam.

I love attending the lessons and it's not just for the fantastic cakes and excellent teaching but also the support I receive from my fellow students.

I can't thank Mrs Sherwood enough for the time and dedication she has put into this project.  I just hope we all pass and will make her proud.

I have to say she is a teacher who has a special gifting - the ability to teach maths and make it fun - a very rare quality indeed!
