Students Reach for the Stars

Posted on 05 July 2016

Inspired by Major Tim Peake’s recent Space expedition our annual Enrichment Week featured activities with an astronomical focus this year.  Whilst Years 10 and 12 were on work experience and Years11 and 13 recovered from public examinations, the rest of the School enjoyed a varied and exciting programme of Space themed events.  The week began with a visit to the Observatory Science Centre at Herstmonceux followed by an overnight camp out in the school grounds for a spot of star gazing. The following day students were taken on a guided tour through the solar system courtesy of a visiting Astrodome before hearing a talk by Professor Branduardi-Raymont from UCL’s Royal Astronomical Society.  Day three saw students travel to London to visit the Science Museum and The National Portrait Gallery.

Then on Friday night the students became the stars when they performed their annual school production written by BBC Radio 4’s Archers actor, Richard Attlee, and produced and directed by Head of Creative Arts, Siobhan Fogarty to an audience of family and friends in an open air auditorium.   Richard was amongst the audience to see the musical play performed in a wooded glade within in the school grounds which had been decorated to create a truly magical setting.  As dusk fell fairy lights illuminated the ethereal surroundings and provided an idyllic backdrop to the ensemble piece which was followed by individual music and dance performances. The perfect end to an inspiring week.
