Students Inspired By Double Gold Olympian

Posted on 10 July 2016

Dame Kelly Holmes took time out of her busy schedule to be the guest speaker and present awards at our annual Prize Giving ceremony.  Students, Staff and Parents were inspired to hear Dame Kelly talk about her route into top flight athletics and her belief that you should set your sights high and then strive to achieve your goals.  Students, who earlier that day had enjoyed their annual Sports Day, were then shown a film of the races at the Athens Olympics in which Dames Kelly won her two Gold medals.

Earlier in the year we had been selected to be one of Dame Kelly’s charity fundraising partners for her London Marathon appeal.  Although not a distance she had ever run before the former middle distance medallist clocked up an outstanding time of 3 hours 11 minutes and Year 12 student, Charlie Large, proudly presented our guest of honour with a cheque for £1.477.88 representing the amount raised by the student body.

After presenting awards and cups to our students Dame Kelly was pleased to receive flowers from outgoing Head Boy, Chris Hitch, who had earlier delivered a farewell speech.  Chris will go on to face his own challenge when he undertakes the four day expedition element of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award in the Lake District at the end of term.
