Food Technology
Food Technology is a popular subject with all students being taught it in Key Stage 3, and as an option further up the school. It is also offered as an enrichment activity as part of our afternoon activities program.
With the increase in obesity and fall of cooking skills, it is a true life skill to learn about cookery and and healthy eating. By the end of Key Stage 3 all students will have studied nutrition, how to eat a balanced diet, food hygiene and safety, and will have a solid foundation of skills, which they can enjoy for themselves in the future.
Where possible lessons are practical based, with some experimental work. Examples of the types of products made in the lower school are listed below.
Year 7

Year 8

During year 9, students work on an international foods project where they choose a country and research the foods and dishes prepared. They choose a regional dish from this country and prepare and cook it in class.
Cooking as an activity is a fun and relaxed way to improve cooking skills and to cook for the enjoyment of it. During the Michaelmas Term we focus on different festive treats and hold a popular yearly ‘Best Decorated Christmas Cake Competition'. Students also entered the local ‘Cygnet Awards' with year 7 student James Belt gaining ‘highly commended' for his Pumpkin and Sage Risotto dish.
We have taken part in the national ‘FutureChef' competition for the past 2 years with great success. The competition is aimed at students with an interest in becoming a chef. The guest judge at the School Heat was The Hotel du Vin's Head Chef, Paul Nixon. The school has had outstanding success in both Heats with Callam Hall, a year 11 student, winning both the School Heat and the Kent Heat the following year.
