Sackville School

Lent Term 2012 workset

HOMEWORK

Dr Ann Port

Before Sackville

Whilst studying for my A levels, I also worked as a school laboratory technician. I then completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Medical Biochemistry followed by a PhD in Biochemistry and Genetics. Whilst undertaking the research involved in my postgraduate studies, I also helped with the teaching of undergraduate students. Just as I was completing my PhD, I started my family and had 3 boys in 4 years. After this, I decided to return to teaching and did so at a local college. During this time I completed my PGCE. I then discovered Sackville and was delighted to accept a position here, as I was very taken with the whole ethos of the school.

Why I enjoy my subject.

I love teaching all the Sciences, as I enjoy opening young minds to the fascinations of the natural world. My specialism, Biology, is all about how life works, and what can be more interesting than that?  If you try to imagine the weirdest creature you can, there is bound to be something out there that is even more bizarre!

Why I enjoy Sackville?

I love all aspects of the school.  The fact that it is relatively small means that you get to know everyone. It really is like one big family.

My favourite lesson?

A difficult one, as I enjoy them all! In the upper school, I love teaching the biochemical aspects of Biology, as that really is my specialist area. However, I also get a terrific amount of enjoyment educating our younger pupils in all aspects of Science. I feel I have a particular affinity for our pupils who have ways of learning that differ from the norm, as all my three sons have dyslexia, dyspraxia or both!

Other roles

I’m classed as a Senior Teacher, which means that I have a variety of extra responsibilities. These include helping to monitor the sixth form; writing UCAS references; helping NQTs and contributing to the SLT.

Passions

At the risk of being boring, I really am passionate about Science and Biochemistry in particular and passing this on to the poor pupils in my care! Another great passion is my family, of course, and my friends that I am fortunate enough to have. I also love walking, travelling and, I’m afraid to admit, I’m a bit of a party animal when the opportunity arises (which isn’t often enough at my age)
