Book Week
Sackville School Book Week scores again
Sackville’s annual Book Week got off to a high scoring start with a visit from football journalist and children’s author, Dan Freedman. Dan was the editor of the Football Association’s magazine and website and in this role interviewed all the big names in English football including Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand. Students from Sackville were joined by pupils from Fosse Bank, Hildenborough and Stocks Green Primary schools to hear Dan talk of his time covering major football tournaments including two World Cups. The author has now used these experiences to inspire him to write the highly successful series of children’s books based on a young footballer, Jamie Johnson. Dan explained to the students that although he was not good enough to play himself, he was able to use his writing skills to forge a career in the game he loved and that he hoped his books would encourage his readers to follow their dreams. A rapt audience enjoyed a reading from one of Dan’s books before a Q&A session followed by a book signing.
Earlier that day Sackville students had demonstrated their literary knowledge by competing in an extremely lively inter-house book quiz. In these high tech times it is reassuring to know that our young people still enjoy reading!
